Who We Are

The Order of the Hermetic Rose is an association of individuals pursuing practices and studies in the Western Mysteries.

This school is based on the Alexandrian model where in that ancient city European pagans, Egyptian magicians, Jewish mystics and Greek philosophers operated side by side, each one’s activities and thinking enhancing the other even though their individual traditions varied considerably. In ancient Alexandria what allowed for this coexistence was an underlying fellowship based on a common pursuit of the Mysteries.

Founder and Director of Studies, Kate Warwick-Smith, is an initiate of several Western Mystery traditions. For over 20 years she has been affiliated with the Servants of the Light School of Occult Science where she has led groups, taught classes and supervised students. She is the author of The Tarot Court Cards: Archetypal Patterns of Relationship in the Minor Arcana.

Our Lineage

The Order of the Hermetic Rose has its foundation in European pagan traditions as well as the Hermetic traditions stemming from Alexandria. We can trace our lineage through the Servants of the Light who is currently led by Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki. In 1977 Dolores took over from her teacher Ernest Butler. Butler was a member of the Society of Inner Light founded by Dion Fortune and was also a student of Robert King, a well known bishop within the Liberal Catholic Church. Dion Fortune herself had Masonic and Theosophical training, and was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn from which so much of modern day occultism has sprung. Such is the outer lineage of our school, however there is an inner lineage that may even be more important.

A contacted mystery school has an inner impulse that fuels its teachings. Without this inner impulse a tradition dies and becomes more akin to an old tome on a dusty bookshelf. An inner impulse or contact is both timeless and timely working through ancient temples and modern mystery schools attuned to the needs of humanity at any given time.
